Freedom of Speech – even if the speech is stupid

It sticks in my craw to hear that fanatically religious footballer said in the media yesterday “Wiv today’s acknowledgement and apology by Rugby Austraya we have been vindicated”. He’s just too stupid to actually understand what has happened. It’s not about his beliefs being vindicated. For God’s sake – he believes the fires in NSW were caused by god punishing us for approval of gay marriage. His fanatical religion also says that it is ok to possess slaves (Leviticus 25:44), working on sabbath deserves being put to death (Exodus 35:2) and that you are not to have contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual uncleanliness (Leviticus 15: 19-24). What has been vindicated is the principle of freedom of speech in Australia. We have a right to express our views (no matter how stupid the footballer is who expresses them). That principle has been upheld and that is a positive. Let’s hope now that this has been resolved his stupid beliefs stop being published in the media.  If you actually want to hear them, you have to get up early on a Sunday morning and join his congregation.
